Background, professional training and performance history
Andrea Johnson is a pianist and music educator from Portland, OR. Her love for music began at the age of five when she was given her first piano. This interest was soon accompanied by formal lessons with Mrs. Elizabeth Stern, Andrea’s childhood piano teacher. Since this time, Andrea has been the recipient of numerous awards at the state, regional and national levels and has had the opportunity to play as soloist with the Oregon Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony as well as several volunteer and community orchestras. In 2005, Andrea performed on From The Top, a national radio broadcast that showcases the top young classical musicians in the country and was awarded their prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Young Artists Scholarship.
At the age of 13, Andrea opened a private teaching studio where she learned the joy of sharing her musical knowledge with others, teaching as many as 20 younger pianists at a time. She began her college education at Walla Walla University and recently completed her Bachelors of Music at Portland State University. Andrea is a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon and is pursuing master’s degrees in piano pedagogy and piano performance. While living in Eugene, Andrea is finding time to expand her musical knowledge, collaborate with exciting musicians and nurture the dreams of other aspiring pianists! Andrea is also a singer and performs with her very musical family in Portland.
Artist statement and teaching philosophy
“I believe that the skills that one acquires while learning to play an instrument translate into many other aspects of life. My desire is to bring out those valuable lessons and help my students to see how to relate them to their own personal goals. I understand that music is a lifelong pursuit and that a person’s relationship to music is always shifting. I also understand that music has transformative power. Because of this, I strive to make the beauty of artistic expression come alive for my students by encouraging them to play at their highest level."
