All the way with Santa Fe! Join Steve Stone & The Emerald City Jazz Kings as they welcome Dick Hyman and his jazz band for OFAM's traditional dinner-dance!
This year's theme is, of course, trains; and we've dedicated the evening to one of the great trains of the world, Santa Fe's extraordinary Super Chief. But we're looking for a different sort of "loco-motion" tonight! Put on your dancing shoes and get ready for an evening of jazz and Swing that you won't soon forget!
What will you hear? Of course, some of the great "train tunes" of the Big Band era -- "On the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "Super Chief", and more. In addition, Steve and Dick have conspired to survey the best of Swing. Dick and his jazz unit pay special attention to Count Basie. Steve has decided to lead the Emerald City Jazz Kings in a tribute to the unsung talents of the era's superb arrangers. Here's what he has to say about the program:
"Some of the greatest writing for the big bands occurred during and immediately after World War II. Arrangers were finally being recognized as the true architects of big band style. They were being challenged not only to come up with fresh new ideas but also to deal with large groups. For our dance, we are going to play some representative arrangements of some of the best known big bands. Here are some examples and their respective arrangers:
Count Basie - "9:20 Special" (Buster Harding)
Benny Goodman - "Mission to Moscow" (Mel Powell)
Tommy Dorsey - "Opus One" (Sy Oliver)
Harry James - "Music Makers" (Jack Mathias)
Les Brown - "Sentimental Journey" (Ben Homer)
Gene Krupa - "Leave Us Leap" (Ed Finkel)
Artie Shaw - "S'Wonderful" (Ray Coniff)
Woody Herman - "Happiness I A Thing Called Joe" (Ralph Burns)
Boyd Raeburn - "Rip Van Winkle" (George Handy)
Charlie Barnet - "Skyliner" (Billy Moore)
Tex Beneke - "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" (Bill Finegan)"
If you've climbed on board for the Dining Car Special, we begin serving at 6:00 pm. The dance starts at 8, so you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the fare.
