L. Frank Baum’s beloved 1900 children’s tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was hardly unfamiliar to Depression-era America: a hugely successful 1903 stage production had achieved the longest Broadway run of the 1910s and toured the country for 8 years thereafter; and several popular Oz films were released between 1908 and 1933. But when M-G-M premiered its own version of the tale on August 15, 1939, the impact on the American psyche was staggering and permanent. It seems almost everything about this Arthur Freed production was magic and has captivated all, young and old alike ever since.
The Shedd Institute proudly presents Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen's legendary THE WIZARD OF OZ with 9 performances September 14-30. It's all-new production of the 1989 stage adaptation of THE WIZARD OF OZ re-creates the screenplay of MGM's legendary 1939 film to a "T" and features all of the great Yip Harburg/Harold Arlen songs, including “If I Only Had A Brain”, “We’re Off To See The Wizard”, “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead”, "Lions, Tigers And Bears" and, of course, “Over The Rainbow”.
Our production is directed by Richard Jessup; Robert Ashens is music director and conductor; and Caitlin Christopher choreographs. The show features Kenady Conforth as Dorothy, Tom Wilson, Dylan Stasack and Miriam Major as the Scarecrow, Tin Man and The Cowardly Lion. Janet Whitlow and Sophia James are the Wicked Witch of the West and Glenda, the Good Witch of the North. Matt Leach and Phil Dempsey are The Guard of The Emerald City Guard and The Great Oz. And Mia is Toto!
This show is perfect for the entire family.
