We bring OFAM 2006 to a close with a journey through Irving Berlin’s America! Berlin is unique among American songwriters in that he was active from the turn of the century well into the late 1950s, and was able to reflect America’s triumphs and tribulations in his songs.
This is really what our entire festival has been about--that Irving Berlin, this Russian-Jewish immigrant kid, did as much or more than anyone else to help all of America understand what it MEANS to be an American. And he did that through his songs. Perhaps Mr. Berlin expressed this best himself in a new verse he wrote in 1980 for his 1921 hit, "Say It With Music":

Say it with music,
Beautiful music.
Somehow for so many years,
This great land, through smiles and tears
Has said it with music,
With words and music.
Let's keep America strong,
And say it with a beautiful song.

We invite you to join Dick Hyman, his all-star band, and many special guests for this stirring tribute to Berlin and the nation he loved so well!
