At the twilight of the Jazz Age and the opening years of the Great Depression a close harmony sister act from New Orleans made the transition from vaudeville onto records, radio and film into national prominence with particular flare. The Boswell Sisters (Martha, Helvetia "Vet", and Connee) approached songs with a playfulness and almost irreverent panache that has seldom been equaled,
Hummin’ to Myself is one of 6 OFAM 2022 concerts presented twice:
Evening: Thu, July 28, 7:30 pm
Matinee: Sat, Aug 6, 1:30 pm
blending their spot-on intricate harmonies with a host of antics: scat, instrumental imitation, ‘Boswellese’ gibberish, tempo and meter changes, major/minor juxtaposition, key changes, and incorporation of sections from other songs. After the Sisters broke up in 1936 when Vet and Martha decided to get married, Connee continued in her own solo career until 1960. Shirley Andress and company celebrate The Boswell Sisters and explore especially the career and art of Connee.
