The Shedd Institute is extremely pleased to bring for the first time ever to Eugene’s Silva Concert Hall, direct from Mexico City, the legendary Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.
The world’s foremost Mariachi band, Mariachi Vargas was founded in 1898 by Gaspar Vargas and Manuel Mendoza of Tecalitalan, Mexico and has thrived for over 100 years and five generations of musicians. Led by Jose “Pepe” Martinez, the current band boasts 12-member playing violin, trumpet, vihuela, guitarron, harp and guitar.
In addition to the appearance of the greatest Mariachi group of all time, The Shedd Institute is proud to sponsor a 3 day Lane County residency with the group and vocal competition winners (college division) of the 2007 Mariachi Extravaganza held annually in San Antonio Texas. This special Mariachi group will be available for school appearances throughout our region from Wednesday, March 12 through Friday, March 14th and will open for Mariachi Vargas Friday night at The Hult Center.
