Background, professional training and performance history
Ulysses Loken performed and taught in the San Francisco Bay area in numerous classical, chamber, and jazz settings for over a decade before recently relocating to Eugene. He has held positions teaching piano at the San Francisco Community Music Center, music theory courses at Academy of Art University, class piano at Ruth Osawa San Francisco School of the Arts, and was also on staff as an accompanist at City College of San Francisco.
He received a MM in classical piano San Francisco State, studying with Roger Woodward and William Corbett-Jones, and is currently a doctoral student in Piano Performance at the University of Oregon, studying with Dean Kramer.
Ulysses enjoys teaching and has worked with children to adults, complete beginners to advanced students. He teaches all levels of classical repertoire, as well as jazz and pop styles. He works with each student to plan lessons that fit with his or her goals and can offer a variety of lesson options, which could focus on a single style or a combination.
Artist statement and teaching philosophy
βIt is my goal as a teacher to give insight into understanding and enjoying all aspects of music. I believe in a holistic approach to teaching, incorporating technical, aural and theoretical skills. I believe that a well-rounded musical education is important no matter what age or skill level."
