Background, professional training and performance history
A native of Denver Colorado, Susan has been playing drums for 8 years. Susan currently is in her final term at the University of Oregon, working for a jazz studies degree, studying with Gary Hobbs. She has played in a large variety of musical situations: jazz bands, funk bands and the U of O gospel band. Susan has also spent a good amount of time in the recording studio. Because of this she is able to play many different styles comfortably. Currently she is playing in a jazz/rock trio called Bustin' Jieber. With this project really anything goes which is the way it should be! Susan also plays with a folk, jazz quartet called Hot Milk, playing originals and 1930s covers.
Artist statement and teaching philosophy
"I am enthused with rhythm, whether it is groovin' in the pocket or experimenting with layered polyrhythms. I want to open my student’s eyes to the world of rhythm! I want to help teach the fundamentals of drumming; safe technique, good time, and playing with the right "feel". I believe a teacher should adapt to what a student is interested in. Making sure that my student is having fun playing drums is my priority. I welcome students at all levels and all ages."
Susan finds playing music to be a beautiful thing to do. "There is a strong energy that connects me to music that constantly wants to be released, it is impossible to deny."
