Join us for another fun-filled evening of great food, swinging tunes and plenty of dancing as Dick Hyman, Bob Wilber, and very special guest Norman Leyden take their respective places on the podium to lead the Festival Big Band (an expanded version of OFAM’s popular Emerald City Jazz Kings!) in recreations of three of the great big bands that came to Paris in the 1930s and ‘40s: Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong Orchestra, and Glenn Miller’s legendary Army Air Force Band. Well-known in the Northwest as the Associate Conductor of the Oregon Symphony, Mr. Leyden is better known nationally as one of the top big band directors in the business -- a fact that isn’t surprising when we’re reminded that he was the staff arranger for Miller’s Army Air Force Band! Special feature appearances will be made by Festival favorite Byron Stripling and vocalist Joanne "Pug" Horton. Period clothes (yes, even those old WWII uniforms!) will once again be the apparel of choice in this recreation of a USO dance, with prizes given to the best! Dinner begins at 6 pm with entertainment by OFAM’s Young Artists Academy and dancing gets underway at 8 pm, so come and enjoy with us a wonderful evening down memory lane!
Musical Genres: jazz, swing, great songs, and plenty of each!
Selected tunes: East St. Louis Toodle-oo, Creole Love Call, Mahogany Hall Stomp, Honeysuckle Rose, Crazy Rhythm, Les Yeux Noirs, String of Pearls, In the Mood, Tuxedo Junction, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Red Light, American Patrol, Moonlight Serenade, and more!
