I'm Glad There Is You
The song stylings of Johnny Hartman & Lena Horne
Thu, Oct 14 - Sun, Oct 17
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute
The Emerald City Jazz Kings led by Glenn Griffith and featuring Shedd veterans Siri Vik and Bill Hulings present the rich and diverse songbooks of jazz vocalist Johnny Hartman and legendary Hollywood entertainer Lena Horne. A remarkable jazz vocalist who specialized in romantic ballads, Johnny Hartman (1923-83) was well-known and critically acclaimed in jazz circles during his lifetime (he was the only singer to record with John Coltrane and worked with both Earl Hines, Dizzy Gillespie, and Erroll Garner among others), and achieved broader recognition after his death when Clint Eastwood used 4 of his ballads in 1995's The Bridges of Madison County. Throughout her extraordinary 70-year career, which included turns at The Cotton Club, as a big band singer, on Broadway and in Hollywood, Lena Horne (1917-2010), was an impeccable voice and a powerful presence. Her pride in her heritage, her refusal to compromise herself, and her innate elegance, grace, and dignity, and her work to improve the status of African Americans in the performing arts has provided a permanent legacy.
