The Wizard of Oz
(Arlen & Harburg, 1939)
Fri, Aug 8, 7:30 - 10:00 pm
Silva Concert Hall, Hult Center
L Frank Baum’s beloved 1900 children’s tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was hardly news to Depression-era America: a hugely successful 1903 stage production had achieved the longest Broadway run of the 1910s and toured the country for 8 years thereafter, and several silent Oz films were made between 1908-33. But when M-G-M premiered its own version of the tale 79 years ago this month at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, the impact on the American psyche was staggering and permanent.
The Shedd Institute is proud to present an all-new production of the Royal Shakespeare Co’s 1988 stage adaptation of this legendary motion picture, which follows the original screenplay almost word for word and retains all of the great Yip Harburg/Harold Arlen songs; and a fresh new look you won't want to miss! This year's production stars fresh new faces, Sophie Mitchell, as Dorothy and Siri Vik as the Good Witch, and OFAM favorites Bill Hulings, Chip Sherman, Mark Huizenga, Suzanne Bunker and Patrick Torelle as the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Wicked Witch and Wizard, and Sandy Naishtat as the Gatekeeper of Oz. Kirk Boyd directs, with music direction by Vicki Brabham, choreography by Richard Jessup, sets by Jerry Hooker and costumes by Mary Mikkelson.
