Music Matters!
What music matters to you?
by Ginevra Ralph, Director of Education
At The Shedd we assert that music does matter to us as humans. If we could explain why hearing "Amazing Grace" brings us to tears, or Barber’s Adagio for Strings catches our breath, or Otis Day’s Shout causes 50,000 people to get slightly crazy every week at Autzen Stadium, then we would never have to argue that this fundamental form of communication belongs in everyone’s lives from the time that we hear our 1st lullaby until the 2nd line celebrates our departure with "When the Saints Come Marching In"!
Meanwhile, though, at The Shedd we spend a lot of time asking “What music matters to you?”
    • What do you want to play or sing?
    • What styles do you want to learn more about?
    • Who do you want to hear on stage?
Last year we launched a multi-year grant project* at Agnes Stewart Middle School called Music Matters. It’s designed to provide a comprehensive music program across all grades, all students, and inclusive of as many ASMS and neighborhood families as possible. We are asking students and parents all of those questions – both to find out their answers, but also to let them know that The Shedd is a resource for them in multiple ways.
Sharing music can have a powerful impact on all of us, whether we understand why or not! Come play, learn, and listen in 2016 – often!!
*Music Matters is a part of the "Studio To Schools" initiative of The Oregon Community Foundation, which was inspired by its Fred Fields Fund for education and the arts.

Basic Piano
Piano is a great instrument for anyone to start music lessons on and a fundamental tool for all instrumentalists, singers, and songwriters. It provides a strong foundation for reading music, manual coordination, and ear training all at the same time. In our Basic Piano courses students will learn basic keyboard orientation and simple melodies. We have two Basic Piano sections: Basic Piano for K-3 on Tuesdays and Basic Piano for 4-8 on Thursdays.
